How to Compress Images Without Visible Loss
Phone photos are often 3 to 8 MB, far more than a website or an email needs. You can usually make them several times smaller and still see no difference.
Steps
- Reduce the size first. A photo 4000 pixels wide shown at 1200 pixels is wasted data. Set a maximum width of 1200 to 1600 for the web.
- Pick the quality. For JPG and WebP, a quality of 70 to 85 is the usual balance. Below 60 you start to see blocks.
- Choose the format. WebP is usually smaller than JPG at the same look. JPG works everywhere. Use PNG for sharp graphics and screenshots.
- Compare. The tool shows the size before and after. Zoom in on the result before you replace the original.
Good to know
Each time a JPG is saved again, it loses a little quality. Always compress from the original.
Compressing in the browser means your photos are not uploaded.
Smaller images also load faster, which helps websites rank in search.
